Rochester and Letchworth

Rochester's Ontario Beach Park and Letchworth State Park

Ontario Beach park

Only had a brief look at the city of Rochester, home of Kodak. It was a lovely day so we spent it outdoors at Ontario Beach Park. It is located in the northern part of the city on the shores of Lake Ontario. This 39-acre park contains one of the Great Lakes best natural sand beaches and attracts tens of thousands of visitors annually......very quiet at this time of the year.

Ontario Beach park

It is home to the historic Denzel Carousel.

Ontario Beach park

The carousel was carved and created by the firm of G.A. Dentzel in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was installed at Ontario Beach Park in 1905 and has remained in its original location ever since.

Ontario Beach park

The carousel is a menagerie model and consists of 52 riding animals and two chariots, set in three rows. The hand-carved animals include: 22 Jumping Horses, 11 Standing Horses, 3 Cats, 1 Deer, 1 Giraffe, 1 Goat, 1 Lion, 2 Mules, 3 Ostriches, 3 Pigs, 3 Rabbits and 1 Tiger. In 1984, the County initiated a complete restoration of the animals to their original condition.

Letchworth State Park

South of Rochester is Letchworth State Park. The park is roughly 17 miles long, covering over 14000acres along the Genesee River. Within the park there are three large waterfalls on the river and perhaps as many as fifty waterfalls found on tributaries that flow into it. The gorge formed by the river has rock walls rising up to 550 feet in places and which narrow to 400 feet above the middle of the three falls. It prompted the area's reputation as the "Grand Canyon of the East".
