All of the media coverage during the Lake District and England's heaviest rain fall since records began has been centred on the worst hit towns of Cockermouth and Workington. But the flooding has been widespread all over Cumbria. Over 12in of rain fell during the wettest 24 hours that I have ever spent here and this was on top of almost endless rain of the last few weeks.
Flooding to our Patio. We live in the South Lakes and were trapped in our house for 24 hours.....
........and we could not get into Ambleside for two days. The water was about 5ft deep here and up to the top of the windows on this car. It floated around in the road for two days......I wonder if you can trade in for a boat on our car scrappage scheme?
The Under Loughrigg Road from Ambleside was partially washed away........
.....and during the flooding a Mountain Rescue Land Rover going to someone's assistance was washed off the road and ended up on its side in the field. The River Rothay normally runs on the other side of these cottages......
....but the river burst it's banks, ran between the cottages, washed away the foundations of the road.......
.......
.......and deposited the foundations in the field. The floods were six days ago, and this field still looks more like a lake.
This children's play centre had only just been opened....it was completely wiped out.
The entrance into Rothay Park from the Under Loughrigg Road........
....you can see how high the water was by the debris caught in the trees.....
...and the railings.
Stock Beck, and the damage it caused to the footpaths.
Quite literally, the Boat House.......in the background,Wetherlam, ready for the next few thousand years.
Waterhead, six days after the flooding. Windermere's level still high; it's still raining and blowing a gale.
The Wateredge Inn was devastated. It has only just been refurbished after the last flooding.......
...the water level was up to the middle of the ground floor windows.....
The gardens and patio, a different scene from the summer......
...debris on the tables.....
...and on the top of the hedge.....
...which you can see the height of here.
Part of the aftermath - contamination into the lake as a sewer overflows.
Waterhead car park
Clean up underway at the Pier.....
....and Borrans park......
About two dozen boats were sunk on Windermere.....
Sand bags at the Waterhead Cafe's.
Sunken piers have a different use as a slalom course.
Very happy Geese.
