In and around Ambleside
Ambleside set in the Vale of Rothay at the foot of the Fairfield Horseshoe and the head of Lake Windermere.
Over the Village towards Nab Scar.....
.....Nab Scar, Heron Pike, and Great Rigg....
......the Fairfield Horseshoe route, on the traditional clockwise way around.....
....and the return down High and Low Pike.
Beyond the Salutation Hotel, the Fairfield Horseshoe.
Early morning sun on Rydal Road and Nab Scar.......
......a popular time for Balloon Flights.
Bridge House. It is possibly the most photographed building in the Lake District. A tiny building, originally an apple store for nearby Ambleside Hall, was built over Stock Beck to escape land tax. Once five mills were driven by the power of Stock Beck and some may still be seen nearby.....
......However, another story is that Chairy Rigg lived here with his wife and six children, although with one room up and one room down it is a mystery as to how they all fitted in. Bridge House was purchased by a group of local people in 1926 and given to the National Trust to care for it. It became the first information and recruiting centre for the National Trust in 1926. It is now a rather cramped shop for the National Trust.
One of the old Mill Waterwheels can still be seen next door at the Glass House......
Across the road....Stock Beck.....
...and another Waterwheel outside the Old Mill Tea Room at The Giggling Goose Cafe.
North Road Bridge over Stock Beck, and the The Unicorn....a popular watering hole.
I wonder what that fare cost?
Ambleside from the Kirkstone Pass.....
....and St Mary's.
Inside St Mary's A nearly packed out church enjoys Ambleside Primary School's end of term production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat.
The end of term is also the end of Mr Tansley the well liked and much respected Head Teacher who retires at this term end. Unlike his shirt and trousers.....he will be missed by all....He said that his outfit would be on ebay straight after the production finished!
Rothay Fields, looking towards Red Screes.
River Rothay........
An English Rose.......
.....and.....what........ so much!....
....other night flyers....a lot of RAF activity, particularly Hercules Transports.
Sunset over Loughrigg.
