Pictures of the new sculpture of Laurel and Hardy in Ulverston's County Square unveiled by comedien Ken Dodd last Sunday.
Coronation Hall Ulverston.....maybe because a Violin is bigger than a leaf.
County Square and the Coronation Hall frontage......Laurel and Hardy to the left of the main entrance. Stan Laurel was born here in Ulverston in 1890. He teamed up with Oliver Hardy and they became silent cinema comedy kings. They visited here in 1947 and made an appearance at the Coronation Hall.
Lots of people coming to view the sculpture. Over 2000 were here on Sunday. All the town's accomodation was full, and Ken Dodd's show at the Hall was fully booked.....little did they know that when Ken Dodd gets you in to one of his shows....you cannot escape. We went to one last year. It started at 7pm...we got out at 1am the following morning. He told us that he paid all the taxi drivers to go home so it was no use trying to leave.
Lots of interest......
.......looks like they are posing for this one.
The classic pose....leaning on the lampost. It took 15 years of fund raising by the international appreciation society, The Sons of the Desert, to raise the £60.000 cost of the bronze sculpture by Graham Ibbeson.
Hardly necessary in Ulverston in April....a fan from the Sons of the Desert has placed these commemorative desert hats on.
Some of their sayings literally etched in stone.......
Local shops sharing the mood
