The sheep here are penned whilst the farmers mark them with dye - when they finish talking - as an ownership mark, called a Smit Mark. You will notice that the mark is in the same place and of the same colour on all the stock....position and colour distinguishes ownership when the flocks mix on the fells. It's usually done in conjunction with a Lug mark. The marks for each individual flock is recorded in the Shepherd's Guide.
